Ballet Terminology

Grand-dlie- Big Bending

Demi-plie- half bend, as far as possible with heels on floor

Releve- rise, demi-pointe

Releve soussus- rise under and over

Port de bras- Carriage of the arms

Battement tendu-(baught-ma)- stretched beating battement- movement of the leg away and toward the body.

Battement jete- thrown beating

En croiz- crosswise, in all directions (front, side, back)

Degage- freeing of the foot (to disengage)

Ron de jambe a terre- circle of the leg on the ground (1/2 circle)

En dehors- Outward: en dedand- inward

Balancoire-swing

Cou-de-pied-neck of the foot

Battement frappe-Struck beating

Jazz Dance Vocabulary

Arabesque- The body is supported on one leg, feet may by turned out or not turned out; the knee may be flexed or locked.  The other leg is fully extended to the back.

Attitude- The body is supported on one leg. Feet may be turned out or not turned out; the knee is flexed or locked.  The other leg is lifted in back or forward with the knee flexed.

Battement- A movement in which the working leg is lifted from the hip into the air and returned to the floor.  The working knee is locked, supporting leg may be flexed or locked.  Floor flexed or pointed.

Catch step- Two steps taken in any direction, using one and one-half counts of music.

Chasse- A step together step, plie, releve, plie.  (to chase)

Chest lift- The chest releases and lifts to its uppermost forward position.  The rib-cage expands by inhaling through the nose with the mouth closed.  Chest returns by contracting rib-cage.  Exhale air by opening mouth and pushing air from lungs.

Chaine (Turns)- (Sh-a-nae)-Fast two-step turns that take two steps to complete one turn.  May be done in releve, demi-plie, or Grand-plie.
